Lakewood

Lakewood, the first suburb west of Cleveland, is well-maintained, ethnically diverse, and walkable. Located on the Lake Erie shoreline just seven miles west of Downtown Cleveland, the feel of Lakewood is both urban and suburban. It is a place where a young professional or a family could easily live. Commercial pockets along Madison and Detroit Roads offer many conveniences, restaurants, coffee shops, and nightlife.

Community


Established in 1889, Lakewood is now the third largest city in Cuyahoga County and the most densely populated city in Ohio. It is a community with beautiful neighborhoods and parks, award-winning restaurants, a vibrant arts and culture scene, bustling business districts, historic homes, and family-friendly events.

The city includes the Downtown Lakewood Historic District and three distinct neighborhoods: West End, Birdtown, and Uptown. Lakewood has several annual community events including the Lakewood Arts Festival and Taste of Lakewood


Housing


Most housing stock in Lakewood is from 1920s and 1930s. Although new pockets are springing up in the Clifton Pointe, McKinley Place, and Rockport neighborhoods. Affordable cottage-style homes all the way up to $1M lakefront mansions are on tree-lined streets, many within walking distance of Lake Erie.

The Clifton Park neighborhood (250 homes situated in the far northwest corner) began as a playground for Cleveland’s wealthy in the late 1880s, and today offers a tight-knit homeowner’s association that provides access to the private Clifton Beach Club, one of region’s prettiest beaches.


Lakewood offers hundreds of rental units and plenty of housing options young professionals, families, and empty nesters.


Thirteen high-rise buildings on the lake (The Gold Coast) offer low maintenance rental and condo options with great lake and downtown views.


Amenities


The Downtown Lakewood Historic District runs through heart of the city, encompassing Detroit Avenue from Bunts to Arthur and surrounding sections of Warren Road. This thriving commercial corridor is home to nearly 100 businesses, many of which are independent and locally owned, as well as 30+ dining establishments. Shopping amenities include both independent and big box options.

Beck Center for the Arts non-profit organization that combines professional theater with arts education in Northeast Ohio. It reaches of 60k people from over 500 zip codes annually through over 230+ performances and 780+ classes and programs offered each year.


Parks and Recreation


Lakewood residents and visitors both take advantage of the community’s parks, green spaces, and community pools, which include public parks, neighborhood parks, pocket parks, and the Lakewood Dog Park. Lakewood Park is the community’s “crown jewel.” It is a 31-acre lakefront park that includes a community pool, a zero entry children’s wading pool, tennis courts, sand volleyball, a playground, a bandstand, lakefront promenade featuring the Solstice Steps, picnic areas, softball fields, a museum, a skatepark, and pavilions. Everything you could ever want!


Lakewood City Schools provide a robust recreation department for both youth and adults.


Libraries


Lakewood residents enjoy the two branches of the Lakewood Public Library, a local library that receives consistently high rankings in the nation.

Residents also have access to the Cuyahoga County Public Library system, arguably the best system in the country.


Schools


Because of Lakewood’s affordability and proximity to Cleveland, it attracts families from around the world with more than two dozen languages spoken in the public schools.


Niche.com gives Lakewood City Schools and Overall A. The district has 4,430 students in grades PK, K-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. Lakewood High School is consistently well-rated.


Lakewood Catholic Academy for grades PreK-8 and St. Edward High School for boys are also located in Lakewood.
