Aurora

Aurora, once a farming town in Portage County, is now a growing community with over 16,000 residents, a small town feel, and highly-ranked public schools. The city offers a wide range of homes from those surrounding the gated Barrington Golf Club community to modest ranches with acreage and privacy. Aurora's history is traced back to the late 1700s with the Aurora Center Historic District at its heart (and on the the National Register of Historic Places).

Aurora owns 1,800 greenspace acres open to the public including thirteen city parks and nature preserves that provide all purpose trails, disc golf courses, a splashpad, athletic fields, skate parks, and kayak and boat rentals. Programming through the Parks & Recreation Department includes sports for youth and adults, a community garden, educational programming, and transportation for senior citizens.

Aurora offers plenty of community events throughout the year. Some highlights include the annual Fishing Derby, summer concert series, and extensive holiday programming. The city celebrates the 4th of July with fireworks, a festival, a parade, fun run, and a drive-in movie night. Residents who love winter can partake in winter actvities including an annual Holiday Tree Lighting Festival, snowman competition, and more.

For dog residents, there are two great dog-friendly parks: Tails n’ Trails and Aurora Sunny Lake Park.

Residents have access to the Aurora Memorial Library, which is part of the Portage County District Library. Aurora also is home to the Aurora Community Theatre. And the Aurora Historical Society and its website are worth a visit.

The city is also home to Aurora Farms Premium Outlets which feature over 50 brand name outlet stores. Residents and visitors enjoy a handful of independent restaurants and the local Orchid House Winery.

The Aurora City School District serves Aurora’s students. There are three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Aurora High School has about 1,000 students.
