Neighborhoods and Suburbs

Cleveland Heights

Known as "Home to the Arts," Cleveland Heights is a vibrant, progressive suburb known for its dynamic arts scene, architectural heritage, and community diversity. It is just up the hill from the museums, colleges, and world-renowned hospitals in University Circle and provides an easy commute to Downtown Cleveland.

Community

Founded in 1903, today Cleveland Heights is one of the most eclectic and diverse communities in the region. It appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds and has a strong sense of community.

It has a tradition of street clubs dating back as early as 1917, and many streets in the community have long-standing traditions. They host gourmet dinners, take part in parades, and also hold street meetings. Many street clubs host block parties in the summer months, although any resident can organize one. The City will provide barricades to keep your street free from traffic during your party hours.

Housing

A wide range of housing stock with varying housing costs is available in this community full of curb appeal. You will find turn-of-the-century homes, both moderate and grand, front-porch Colonials, Arts and Crafts bungalows, stately Tudors, and luxurious new condos.

Amenities

Cleveland Heights is home to 11 unique shopping districts that are enjoyed by both residents and visitors. The Cedar Fairmount Business District is home to restaurants, shops, and service and convenience businesses. Its newest addition is the in-progress Top of the Hill multi-use development.

The Cedar Lee District is home to a wide range of businesses but is most well-known for its incredible arts and culture scene. The Cedar Lee Theatre is a destination for independent films, unique screenings, and National Theater performances, and Dobama Theatre has been offering contemporary theatre arts for over 55 years.

Coventry Village is home to over 40 independently owned businesses, located in just one walkable 1/4 mile. The district offers community events and a lively nightlife scene.

Heights Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts organization that “taps into the potential of our creative residents to enrich community life.” It focuses on music, literary, and visual arts through events, exhibitions, and programming.

Parks and Recreation

Cleveland Heights Parks and Recreation offers extensive programming and maintains several must-see parks. It boasts over 135 acres of beautiful parkland, five parks, plus recreational facilities. The list of features offered through the parks goes on and on: paths, ballfields, basketball courts, turf fields, pickleball, picnic shelters, playgrounds, skateboard park, sledding hill, tennis courts, theater and art gallery, and a Veterans Memorial. A Historic Hiking Tour Around Lower Shaker Lake is also available.

Cain Park is the most well-known of Cleveland Heights’s parks. Not your “ordinary City park,” Cain Park has traditional park features plus:

  • An outdoor, intimate, covered theater similar to a mid-sized off-Broadway space (Alma Theater)

  • An outdoor covered amphitheater (Evans Amphitheater)

  • An air-conditioned art gallery (Feinberg Art Gallery)

  • Programming that includes professional theatrical productions, a nationally recognized Arts Festival, cabaret series, professional dance companies, children’s programming, and concerts featuring national, regional, and local performers

The Community Center includes a fitness center, senior activity center, and an Olympic-size ice rink plus a season outdoor rink. The recreation department offers day camps, events, and both youth and adult sports options. Residents can enjoy several available programs like Women Out Walking and ice skating programs. Aquatic facilities include the Cain Park Splash Pad and the Cumberland Outdoor Pool.

Libraries

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Library began its mission to serve the community in 1921. Its four branches serve as gathering places offering programming, events, and services for all ages.

Residents also have access to the Cuyahoga County Public Library system, arguably the best system in the country.

Schools

The combined Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District provides an excellent educational experience along with a strong athletic program and many extracurricular activities including world-renowned vocal and instrumental music programs. The school district consists of seven elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The high school was renovated in 2017 and reopened to many accolades. Three school buildings house early childhood and preschool programs.

Some students in the Caledonia Neighborhood of Cleveland Heights may be considered to be part of the East Cleveland School District. And some students attend the region’s best private and parochial schools as many are in close proximity to Cleveland Heights.
