Neighborhoods and Suburbs

Avon

Avon, once a small farming community, has developed in the last 20 years into a thriving suburban area with a nice blend of newer amenities and rural roots. Three family farms and markets, spanning six generations, still exist in this Lorain County city. Growth can be attributed to excellent public schools, slightly lower real estate taxes for the region, and easy access to Lake Erie, just five miles to the north.

Avon’s housing stock consists of modest older homes and affordable new construction neighborhoods. The charming French Creek District features independent restaurants, antique stores, and retail shops while Avon Commons provides big box stores, including Target and Costco, that attract shoppers from nearby towns.

The Avon Parks & Recreation Department maintains several parks and facilities including a Little League Park, athletics fields, playgrounds, nature trails, and the Canning Family Dog Park. The Avon Aquatic Facility includes both indoor and outdoor aquatic attractions and hosts several special events and classes throughout the year.

The Lorain County Metro Parks System has several gorgeous parks, amenities, and programming, and the Miller Nature Preserve is located within Avon’s city limits.

Golf enthusiasts enjoy several courses within Avon and nearby. Public courses include Bob-O-Link, Hilliard Lakes, and Sweetbriar. Private courses include Red Tail and the Lakewood Country Club.

Avon is home to the Lake Erie Crushers, a Frontier League baseball team that plays at Mercy Health Stadium, and is also home to PLAY:CLE, one of the nation’s largest indoor adventure parks.

Avon residents enjoy the Avon Branch of the Lorain Public Library System. The Avon Local School District serves around 4,000 students across five buildings, and there are a few other local school options as well.
